Essay

Fate is presented in Julius Caesar by cassius and Brutus trying to avoid fate by killing themselves before the civil war killed them because they got other people to kill them so they go heaven because if you commit suicide you go to hell not heaven so they tried to cheat fate by getting others to kill them.

Cassius makes a remark from the quote ‘Then, if we lost this battle’. This could mean if we lose this battle we will die and we will look like cowards by following fate instead of being smart and greater by cheating/avoiding fate.

The fate in that quote is that they are thinking ahead of fate by thinking one step ahead which if by thinking if they lose this war or get killed during the war fate would’ve won and they wouldve lost the war and be treated and thought as cowards.

The quote ‘For fear of what might fall, so to prevent The time of life: arming myself with patience’. This quote is saying how they are going to prevent something which is fate they are going to prevent fate by arming themselves with patience and when the patience is over and lost they will do something (get someone to kill them). Also in this quote Brutus said he is going to arm himself with patience which means just wait to find out what happens during now and then.

A part of fate could be when Caesar should’ve listened to his wife when she said don’t go out because I have a feeling that something bad is going to happen there will be pools of blood from the fountain your blood So if Caesar never went out he wouldn’t have been killed by the conspirators.

Shakespeare has linked all the characters to fate like how cassius had been born on the day he had been killed this is fate because it is unusual for yourself to die on your born day.

  1. Romaine,

You have chosen specific quotations from the given scene and linked them to the theme of fate. Your answers are generally well developed – but you must proof-read to be sure that your meaning is clear.

    Targets:
    1) Refer to a least two other events in the play where fate is explored/shown
    2) Identify and explore the effect of figurative language devices.
